An Significant Moment when Liam Rosenior Transcends Barriers

"Rosenior represents a quality coach who understands the game back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's first African heritage player, it would be dishonest if I said this moment does not affect me."

Those are the words expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club named RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

There have been only twelve black managers – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and played not far from here, he knows this area," added Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a family that fights for what's right… that's impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is an enormous step for Chelsea, for the capital, for every young person with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Do the Numbers Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' head coach in 1996 and became the Premier League's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by an absence of representation at executive level.

As per a BFP 2023's report, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from black backgrounds.

However, analysis from Kick It Out revealed just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching positions, according to data from eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching positions – including senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea head coach, and we want to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of talent present within ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. We need to persist in work hard to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent British managers currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's other big five divisions regarding homegrown managers.

16 out of twenty top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 of the 18 in France.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all young English managers with a youth development pedigree are, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness someone land that job with that profile and we hope he does highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed a path in management. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He highlighted that race does not influence coaching skill and said opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "passionate", noting that he could relate to the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him in moving from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In subsequent Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed coach make a homophobic slur. He vowed support for the inclusion campaign and authored a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's pioneering African heritage manager in Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
