In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The deal grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• A seven-figure bonus for earning the MVP award.
• $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
• Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal includes that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, joins a young core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a last-place season, finishing last in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.

Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out often, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the championship game against the USA, he slugged a tying homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
