RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
