Whereas Trump's earlier complaint centered on Europe's alleged failure to pay for its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a significantly more disturbing perspective.

Tinged with racism and a staggering contempt for Europe's political institutions and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he has rarely visited and has predominantly viewed from a distance.

This is an unabashedly racist theory, with Trump and his circle making clear their support for far-right political parties across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is familiar, its meaning for the continent's defense are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his adherents—a group that includes tech magnate Elon Musk, who has called for the dissolution of the European Union—all politics is inherently transactional. However, whereas the previous argument was about burden-sharing, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy due to its embrace of diversity.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these ideas in a kind of rhetorical loop. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and in exposing the rifts in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European cohesion—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and escalating Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Ukraine facing persistent threats of U.S. withdrawal, the peril is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring European leaders.

This situation requires a firm reaction from European leadership. Although certain leaders, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their pushback, others—like British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson declined to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
