Following a decisive victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has significantly closed the gap in the championship standings. He is now positioned just 12 points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and in front of teammate Oscar Piastri, the scene is set for a electrifying three-way season finale at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.

His most recent win was far from straightforward. Even though he delivered a masterful drive for Red Bull, the victory was largely determined by a costly strategic decision from the McLaren team. Opting to keep their cars out during an early safety car period, the team effectively gifted the race lead to Verstappen, who seized the moment without hesitation.

"I'm thrilled, I'm eager to go there and have a go at it," he stated. "My mindset is with just good vibes. I'll push to the limit I can but simultaneously, if I don't win it, I still know that I had an incredible season."

This outlook as he puts it removes much of the stress. His focus for the last race is clear: to maximize each opportunity from himself and the machine.

An Improbable Comeback Powered by Upgrades and Teamwork.

What makes this championship charge so impressive is how far he has recovered. Following the Zandvoort round in August, he was an enormous 104 points behind the championship leader his rival and had publicly written off his title chances.

The reversal began with significant car developments introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Changes to the vehicle's underbody and front wing finally addressed persistent balance issues, allowing Verstappen to push to the limit with the chassis once more.

Since that point, his performance has been utterly formidable, securing five victories and multiple podiums. He made sure to highlight the unified work behind this comeback.

"We have triumphed where maybe we shouldn't have, by making the correct decision as a unit," Verstappen added. "The partnership with my team on the pit wall and the every member... we are really well integrated."

Ahead of the arrive in Abu Dhabi, the points situation is crystal clear.

• Lando Norris can secure his debut world title if he outpaces both his two rivals or achieves a podium finish.
