An Unprecedented Mayor

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
