UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
