Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the live show The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about his research, the case would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
